LA Times articles in ProQuest with a library card
Los Angeles Public Library cardholders can read LA Times articles from 1985 to today in ProQuest, plus a historical archive covering 1881 to 2017. This is a text database, not the latimes.com website. LAPL cards are free to California residents, but the instant online e-card is for City of Los Angeles residents only. Other libraries, such as Redondo Beach Public Library, also offer the LA Times through ProQuest.
Print replica on PressReader at some Southern California libraries
PressReader offers the LA Times to public libraries. Long Beach Public Library and South Pasadena Public Library have listed it among their PressReader titles, open to their cardholders. LA County Library and LAPL also offer PressReader, but their pages don't name the LA Times, so log in with your card and search for it.
Free access through your college or university
Some universities pay for LA Times digital access for their community. At Loyola Marymount you register with your LMU or LLS email and a code from the Hannon Library. At Occidental College you create a latimes.com account through the library and reactivate it every academic year. Ask your own library whether it has a deal.
Limited free articles every 7 days
Visitors can read a limited number of articles in a rolling 7-day period, and a free registered account usually gets more. The LA Times does not publish the exact number. Rereading a story within 7 days counts only once, and crosswords and games are free without a subscription.
Free email newsletters
You can sign up for LA Times newsletters, such as the daily Essential California, without subscribing. Reading the email doesn't count toward your article limit, but clicking through to latimes.com does.
Student and educator discount
The LA Times help pages say it runs a subscription programme for students and educators, and Student Beans lists a discounted Unlimited Digital Access rate for verified students. Neither shows the price, so check it at checkout.
US$1 for 4 months for new subscribers
New digital subscribers, and anyone without an active subscription in the past 365 days, can pay US$1 for the first 4 months. You can turn off auto-renewal at any time.
One year for US$60 for new subscribers
The annual digital offer works out at about US$1.15 a week. It has the same rules as the 4-month offer: new subscribers, or no active subscription in the past 365 days.
